Love That Dog!

We went to the Civic Theatre today to see Love That Dog based on the book of poetry by Sharon Creech.  It was very entertaining and the performance really brought all the poems to life with the great visual aides, special effects, and acting.  I was pleasantly surprised by the performance but maybe that is because I don't understand poetry and the performance made it all make sense for me.  So hopefully it made it click for all the students as well.  Maybe we'll read Hate That Cat too.

This week we explored the question “How do you know if something is a fact or an opinion?” We began by reading the biography The Dog That Dug for Dinosaurs. Can you guess what the surprising discovery might be in this story? Then we read an informational text called La Brea Tar Pits, where there were more surprising discoveries for us to find!

Target Vocabulary: discovered, guard, remove, souvenirs, amazed, explained, exact, growled

Phonics Skills: Words with vowel diphthong oo (book); possessives, singular and plural

Vocabulary Strategy: Synonyms

Comprehension Skill: Fact and opinion—tell if an idea can be proved or is a feeling

Comprehension Strategy: Question— ask questions about what you are reading

Objective: Recognize the value of coins and count up to find their total value.

Lesson 7
Objective: Solve word problems involving the total value of a group of coins.

Example:

Danny has 2 dimes, 1 quarter, 3 nickels, and 5 pennies. a. What is the total value of Danny’s coins? b. Show two different ways that Danny might add to find the total.

Silas uses 2 twenty-dollar bills, 3 five-dollar bills, and 4 one-dollar bills on a gift for his aunt. He is going to save the rest. If Silas started with $80, how much will he save?

We are going to the Kalamazoo Civic Theatre to see "Love that Dog" next Friday, April 22nd.  We will be leaving around 9:15 and returning around 12.  Please make sure everyone packs a lunch that day because we will be eating in the classroom.

We finished Part 1 of Module 7 in math.  Part 1 focused on interpreting graphs and data.  We will be moving on to money next week.  We spent a few days reviewing all the coins and their values this week because our math program jumps right into counting different coin combinations within a $1.  IXL is probably the best resource besides Zearn for counting money.

Lesson 2
Objective: Draw and label a picture graph to represent data with up to four categories.

Lesson 3

Lesson 4
