This is the final week for our unit on changes. We have read many interesting selections and talked about how they relate to the Big Idea, “Living things change over time.” The living things in question this week are plants. We are going to explore the question “What steps would you take to plant a garden?” In the fantasy story How Groundhog’s Garden Grew, we will find out how Squirrel helps Groundhog with his vegetable garden. In the informational text Super Soil, we’ll learn how soil helps plants grow.

Science

I'm sure by now you've heard that our caterpillars have arrived.  This will be an exciting unit that will last for the next month or so.  One of the reasons we choose the Painted Lady butterfly to observe in the classroom is because of it's rapid life cycle.  Another reason is because they can survive in an artificial classroom environment living off of processed plant food.  The children each have their own caterpillar to observe on a daily basis.  There are a few objectives to the unit.  Learning the life cycle of a butterfly, body parts of a caterpillar and butterfly, and the basic needs that all insects need to survive.  We will cover all of these things and more over the next month.  Feel free to stop by and see the caterpillars for yourselves.

We have one more week to bring in any change around the house to help out with a wonderful cause.  The class that raises the most money in K-2 gets to duct tape Mrs. Jensenius to a wall.  The last day of collecting will be April 30th.

Everyone did a fantastic job on our economics unit.  Assessments should be in everyone's Friday folder.
