Conferences are coming up on Feb. 14th and Feb. 16th.    Please use this link and the code tk238 to sign up.  It has just been opened.

We are going to have a box top contest next week, Jan. 30 - Feb.3, so please send in any box tops that you have been saving next week.

Since Conferences are on February 14th, LCE is celebrating Valentine's Day as a school on Friday, February 10th.  That is also a 1/2 day.  In the past, I've had students decorate their own mailboxes to hold all their valentines.  The directions are below....

Valentine Originality

Decorate a box at home to be your Valentine mailbox. This will hold your cards from your classmates and teachers. You may use any type of box you wish. Some examples are shoe, cereal, cracker, shirt, tissue, whatever! Turn your box into some clever, creative item to be your mailbox. Some fun ideas may include a toaster, shark, computer, doghouse, candy bar, oven, microwave, fire truck, pop can… really stretch your brain to have an unusual type of mailbox. Or decorate it and make it beautiful!

Guidelines:
1. Cover your box completely.
2. Have an opening large enough for valentines from friends.
3. Create an easy way to remove your cards so you can use
your box to take your valentines home.
4. YOUR NAME must be clearly marked by the opening so it
will be easy for your friends to deliver your valentines.
5. HAVE FUN!
Due Date: Friday, February 10th

Here are a few examples from previous years.

1-20-17

Lake Center has extended our food drive until Monday, January 23rd. Monday will be the last day for donations.

Our 2nd and final conferences are coming up in February.  Conferences will be on Tuesday, Feb. 14th and Thursday, Feb. 16th.  Please look for the email blast from Lake Center next week so you can follow the link and sign up on-line.  I did make it so there wouldn't be as many gaps in the schedule this time around.  If for some reason you are unable to make any of the available times, please contact me and we can set up a time that works for both of us.

We spent the majority of our week talking about the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  We are also working on writing a biography about his life as well.  He was one of the greatest civil rights leaders and I think it's important to talk about how he tried to help solve  the problems our nation faced  without violence.

The 2nd grade classes at Lake Center will be learning about and celebrating Chinese Lunar New Year next Thursday morning.  We are going to have our 4 classes rotate through 4 stations where they will try Chinese stir fry and other native foods to Asia, read a story about a boy and his "lucky" red envelope money, complete a mask, and make Chinese lanterns.  We will wrap up our celebration with a 2nd grade dragon parade through our school.

The 2nd grade has created a sign up genius if you would like to help send in some supplies.

I signed our class up for a free 1 month trial on spellingcity.com  This can be an alternate resource so your child can practice their spelling words.  I'm trying to find a way to make less copies and go paperless on homework.  I know that everyone may not have access to the internet so for now I will still be sending home the spelling packet.  The great thing about spelling city is that you can also focus on our vocabulary and high frequency words for the week.  I can create assignments for the kids to complete or they can just go into the games section and download any of our spelling, vocabulary, or high frequency words for the week.  They can also take practice tests.  You just have to know what lesson we are working on for the week.  We will be on Lesson 16 the week after next.  I don't plan on moving ahead in language arts next week since we only have 3 1/2 days.  I will send log-in info home with the kids today because some of the log-ins are a bit different.

I'm sending home January's book orders today.  If there are any books that you are interested in buying this month, please do so by the end of January.  Please order any items that you would like on-line using our class code DX98H.  You can also send in a check made out to Scholastic and I can place the order for you.

Movie Night

Friday, January 13th
Doors Open at 6:00
Movie Starts at 6:30

Slipper Day

Friday is also Slipper Day at School!

Food Drive

Student council food drive will take place on Jan. 16-20.  Items from this food drive will be donated to 12 Baskets.  The top class will receive a reward from the student council.  More information to be sent home when we return from break.

Winter is Here!

Please make sure to send your child every day with a hat, boots, gloves, warm winter coat, and snow pants.  We will be going outside as much as possible.  We do not have a ton of extra items in the office to borrow and each time a coat or pants are borrowed, we have to take them home to wash. Don't forget regular shoes to wear while inside the school.

Reminder

Thursday, January 26th is a half day of school and there is no school on Friday, January 27th.
I'm not sure why, we have a goofy calendar this year.

Language Arts

We will spend a few weeks on Helen Keller. Next week we will also focus on MLK's life. The goal is to complete a couple informational writings as well. Spelling Test will still be on Friday though.

The next couple of weeks we’ll ask, “How do you know when story ideas are important?” We’ll read the biography of Helen Keller, who learned how to communicate with help from her devoted teacher. And we’ll learn about other ways to communicate in the informational text Talking Tools.

Target Vocabulary: curious, imitated, knowledge, motion, silence, illness, darkness, behavior

Phonics Skills: Words with long o (o, oa, ow) [open, coat, bow]

Vocabulary Strategy: Suffix -ly (means “in a certain way”)

Comprehension Skill: Main ideas and details—tell important ideas and details about a topic

Comprehension Strategy: Summarize— stop to tell important ideas as you read

We have reached the point in our math lessons where we are learning about composing and decomposing ones and tens when adding or subtracting.  Just remember,

composing = carrying over

decomposing = borrowing.

They just call the process by a different name now.  Students are also expected to draw pictures of the place value disks to show the process.

We will continue to practice this strategy through the rest of Module 4 and again in Module 5.  We just finished Lesson 12 if you are using Zearn at home.  It will be a good idea to practice on Zearn at home to reinforce the 2 strategies.

Decomposing
